Living My Legacy Now! Interview: Author, Germaine Brisbane

I was honored to have the opportunity to interview Germaine Brisbane, the author of "How I Got Over".  Germaine was born in Charleston, South Carolina. After a series of bad events at the age of 18, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

He comes from being homeless, molested, and witnessing someone being killed. Now that Germaine has started growing in the knowledge of God's word, he has been able to transform his life. He is using his experiences to make a difference in the lives of others by "living his legacy now!"

His message of personal transformation and hope is one that will resonate in the hearts of many. I hope this interview blesses you as much as it blessed me.

Q1: What inspired you to write your book, "How I Got Over"?

Germaine: While I was tutoring at the Trident Literacy Center in Charleston, SC, a lady asked me about myself. After telling her my story, she encouraged me to write my story because so many people would be able to r…

The Launch of Living My Legacy Now!

Jim Rohn, business philosopher and author once said, "The legacy we live is part of the ongoing foundations of life. Those who came before leave us the world we live in. Those who will come after will have only what we leave them. We are stewards of this world, and we have a calling in our lives to leave it better than how we found it, even it seems like such a small part."
When we read about the stories of people who have summoned the courage to become all that they can be, including efforts to make a difference in the lives of others, their actions inspire our heart with hope and encourages our faith with the belief that we can do the same. One of the reasons that Chicken Soup for the Soul continues to be such a popular and successful book series is because of how each of us relate to one another based on our stories.

My mission here at Grow Forward & Flourish is to empower your strong so that you find the courage to unleash the power in you to be your best self and live…

Leaving a Legacy That Cannot Be Erased

“The choices we make about the lives we live determine the kinds of legacies we leave.”
~Tavis Smiley~

August 28, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. I was two years old when the first March on Washing occurred. As  a kid at the time, I was unaware of the magnitude of the social changes happening in America until a few years later. I overheard the grown folks talking about the civil rights activists but I had no idea that there efforts would someday make it possible for me and those of my generation to take advantage of opportunities that had never before been available to previous generations.
Flash forward fifty years and my daughter, Dee and I are visiting the Columbia's Challenger's Toastmaster club determine to decide on a club that will help us improve our communication skills. Having been a part of Toastmasters several years ago, I believe in the effectiveness of its process in the development of communication and leadership sk…

Procrastination Diet: Week 1 Update

My advice is to never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.”
― Charles Dickens

Last week I informed you that I was implementing a 31-Day Procrastination Diet which was inspired by Robin Sharma's video in my post GET BIG THINGS DONE, NOW! After realizing I hadn't put forth the consistent effort needed to manifest the dreams that I truly want to manifest in my life, I needed to put some "feet to my faith".
Walking My Talk
I realized that it is difficult and near impossible to be a personal of influence if you are not walking your talk as much as you are able, yet you're asking others to do what you are not willing to do. That does not sit well with me. In my gut, I knew that I wasn't doing all that I could do and it was hindering me from helping you and others become all that you can be. I have to be as committed to my personal growth as I want you to be for me to contribute real value in your life.
I found that it was easy for …

In the Spirit: Stay In the Game

To win you've got to stay in the game. ~Claude M. Bristol~
Tuesday, August 22, 2013 marked the 18th anniversary of my son, Blease home going. On that day, I wrote the following as my Facebook status:
"Today, I focus on the beauty of my son's life. My heart is full of love. My heart is not consumed with sorry as it had been all the previous years. I miss him like crazy and would have been honored to see the man he would have become. He would have been 32 years old. I am blessed to have had the privilege of being the vessel used by God to give birth to his soul. I am blessed to be his mother. I am blessed by what his life AND his death taught me. I am blessed that he believed in Jesus. I am blessed that his love for me remains deep in my heart. And it is this "knowing" of his love for me and others and the power of the Holy Spirit that allows me this year to blessed with the ability to focus on the love we shared and the love that will always remain in my heart for h…

Get Things Done, Now!

Be not afraid of going slowly; be afraid of standing still. ~Chinese Proverb~

Stephen Covey wrote in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, "Time management can be captured in a single phrase: Organize and execute around priorities." Unlike money which we can gain or lose, once we spend our time its gone. For this reason, it is critical that we focus our energy toward completing tasks aligned with the reality that we want to experience. Too often, we fail to take action because of fear which I wrote about here and the four action traps which I wrote about here.
In the following video Robin Sharma shares 5 steps that we can implement to GET BIG THINGS DONE, NOW! This video inspired me to start a 31-Day Procrastination Diet. I will post weekly updates on my results each Tuesday for the next four weeks.
If you've been "putting off for tomorrow what you can do today", why not start your personal 31-Day Procrastination Diet and share your experience here on this site ev…

6 Keys to Improving Your Productivity

It is not enough to be busy... The question is: what are we busy about? ~Henry David Thoreau~

We live in a time of "dramatic distractions". The advancement in technology has made it so that we can be reached 24/7. If you were asked to complete a productivity journal for 48 hours, giving an account for all your actions and tasks completed during an 8 or 12 hour time period, what percentage of your time would you say that you spent completing tasks associated with manifesting experiences that are expanding your personal, professional, and spiritual well-being?
With so many distractions during our day, we have to become diligent in our efforts toward what gets our attention. I know for me, I have been guilty of spending too much time on social media networking sites and not enough of time making connections with people, face to face.
On Tuesday, August 20, 2013 I will begin my 31-Day Procrastination Diet. I got this idea from one of Robin Sharma's videos. Today, I have been wor…

In the Spirit: Walk Out Your Victory

“What we believe is what we see.”

~ Sukant Ratnakar~

In a recent post, How to Get Dreams Out of Your Head, I mentioned how I started to study the "best practices" of several bloggers in order for me to develop strategies that would help me get my dream of building a successful online personal development website out of my head. One of the most important things that has happened within me while doing this is: I now believe at the core of my being that this dream is doable.
Everything that is related to the vision I have for the GFF community, from the blog's content to creating a Facebook Fan page, using contributors in the future to guest blogging and helping new bloggers, all of these actions are an expression of me walking out my victory. This belief is shifting the energy in my life. This shift is serving as a magnet and it is attracting to me that which I am becoming.
During this time period, I've stumbled on information for my upcoming book. I've met peopl…

3 Videos That'll Boost Your Happiness

The manner in which we think about our everyday experiences has a lot to do with the level of happiness we experience.

Yes, science has found that we have a baseline happiness level that is due in part to our genetics ( i.e. hedonic adaption), but our happiness is also influenced by the how we think about the experiences that makes up our life.

I discovered the following videos on my research adventures on Google and thought that they might add to the happiness of those who visit and are members of the GFF community. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I did!

Embrace Happiness!
