Makeover Your Workplace Attitude

Why is it important to be indispensable in the workplace? Seth Godin, author of Linchpin argues, “You must become indispensable to thrive in the new economy. The best way to do that, he says is “to be remarkable, insightful, an artist, someone bearing gifts to lead.”

Godin writes, “One of the fascinating aspects of business and organized movements that there’s a correlation between the passion and effort that people bring to a [workplace] project and the outcome.” Market share, innovation, negotiation, and human relations can be shifted with the right sort of insight and effort.”

What’s Your Workplace Attitude?

Godin believes that our discernment of our workplace environment plays a crucial role in the level of passion and effort that we exhibit towards our workplace tasks and responsibilities. In his book, Linchpin, Godin identifies four quadrants of discernment (defined as our ability to see and understand people, things, or situations clearly and intelligently) and how they impact our passion and effort in the workplace. They are as follows:

1.      Fundamentalist: “a person who is attached to the world as he sees it. Change to this person is a threat. Competitiveness is a threat.” Why? Because he insists on seeing the world as he imagines it instead of how it is."

2.      Bureaucrat: “a person who is a passionless ruler or follower. He is indifferent to external events and glides through his day” on automatic pilot. He is not willing to consider other possibilities because he is too busy protecting the status-quo."

3.      Whiner: similar to the fundamentalist and bureaucrat, a whiner is someone attached to his worldview and “can’t muster the effort to make things better, but is extremely focused on complaining about the state of what is.”

4.      Linchpin: this person is “enlightened enough to see the world as it is, understands that the angry customer is not about me: that a job is not guaranteed for life. The Linchpin brings passion to the job. She knows the right effort in the right place can change the outcome, and she reserves her effort for doing just that – the Linchpin focuses on projects that have a likelihood of changing the outcome.” The Linchpin is someone who has made herself indispensable on the job through the quality of her contributions and achievements.





Making the Choice
We waste time grumbling over how we want our present state in the workplace to change, yet we fail to make the connection that we have to be an active participant of the change we want to experience. It is much more satisfying to spend time making a conscious effort to identify how we can demonstrate greater passion and effort toward tasks and projects that contribute to the change and success we want to experience on the job.
Godin writes, “There are no shortage of panic and no shortage of people willing to rearrange the truth to preserve their vision of the world as they’d like it to be.” If we are honest with ourselves, each of us has been guilty of defending our point of view while ignoring the facts of a situation. Our worldview and emotional attachment to it colors the perception and expectations that we have toward every aspect of our life, including what we think about work.

The following three questions will help you begin to reflect on how you can makeover your workplace mindset so that you can begin to develop the discernment of a Linchpin.

1.      What behavior do you need to STOP that’s preventing you from contributing relevant value toward your workplace responsibilities and the organization’s success?

2.      What behavior do you need to START exhibiting that will contribute value that cannot be outsourced?

3.      What behavior should you CONTINUE to demonstrate that is helping you to be perceived as an employee that contributes value to the success of your organization?

Change is inevitable. The reality of the new economy is that no job is guaranteed for life. The sooner we accept this reality and begin to plan and prepare ourselves to navigate our professional life with this truth the better we will be able to cope with this fact. Denying this truth will not make it so. We have the power of choice. We can choose to take on this new reality of the new economy with passion and effort and position ourselves for sustainable workplace success by developing the discernment of a Linchpin.
